I describe myself as an expressionist painter who improvises in colour. I paint abstracts and subject matter with a style almost musical and lyrical (ie Jazz). The paintings are built with a few basic colours and then developed to a pitch of the minds eye. They are deeply felt, intuitive and almost primitive. I paint ‘oncers’ to capture my Christian faith in the spirit and life of the subject.

Bill Allan was born in Palmerston North in 1941 and trained at Ilam School of Fine Art, Christchurch before moving to Wellington in 1974.

Married to ballet dancer Jill Sunderland since 1980, he worked for the Wellington City Council until early 2000. He is a born again Christian, attending the Church on Cuba at the Oaks Cuba Mall.

A regular exhibitor since the 1980’s and an member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, Bill Allan has works in many collections and was included in Alva Bett’s ‘New Zealand Art – A Modern Perspective’
