COLLABORATIVE INSTALLATION MAKES USE OF CITY RUBBISH

‘MAKING HERE’ is a collaborative art project between Sian Torrington and artists from Pablos Studio. Taking their cue from the urban environment where they live and work  - they have created an installation at ROAR! gallery using waste materials from local businesses.

"Using waste expands our ideas of and what can be used as an art material and what can be expressed" says Sian.

Buildings, streets and car parks are transformed through an abstract art making process into bold colour blocks, drippy floors and wrapped windows.

The project began with a series of workshops in which artists took part to become collaborators. The aim is to encourage thinking about art as an experimental process which does not necessarily end in one object for sale but emphasises the process, and also values the experience of learning and collaboration.

"As much about the process of collaboration itself as the city, individual artist voices find their strength within the whole." - Sian.

Sian Torrington is a Wellington based artist who works in drawing, sculpture and installation. Interested in process and how things are made, she works by building th rough a project rather than with a plan in mind. Previous projects have included ‘Inhabitance’ a Public Art Fund project at 83 Kent Terrace in 2010 and Open Water Bodies at Blackmore Jean Gallery in 2010.

The project was made possible by a grant from Wellington City Council’s Creative Community Scheme.
