URBAN LANDSCAPES
ISOLATION AND ALIENATION IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
22 SEPTEMBER – 8 OCTOBER 2011
Local artists explore the urban environment in landscapes that evoke something of the loneliness and isolation of the city.
Gary Abel, Evan Barraclough and Hyun Mu Shin’s architectural landscapes exude an eerie stillness, full of the signs of human habitation but devoid of people.
Luke Sullivan paints the places he goes and the faces he sees. His sensitive choice of colour and soft atmospheres make us look afresh at every-day scenes. ‘On a Sunday’ is a poignant contemplation of the lone worker engaged in manual labour and in ‘Kenny’s Café’ diners sit alone.
Scrunched and shellacked paintings exemplify Fraser’s experimental approach. They are attached to the wall by a single nail and can be spun to hang at odd angles inviting interaction

A tableau of closely cropped drawings provide snapshots into the carefully observed world of Charles Cunningham. Colourful and with a strong graphic sensibility they hint at a larger story one that is all about the looking.
