This is an inspiring collection of works, both from old favourites and artists new to the studio. Pick & Mix is a visual feast, a showcase of colourful artists exploring a colourful range of themes.
Featuring works by Michael Cox, Zofia Lipski, Bill Allan, Beth Te Aho and many many more of the 100 artists that work at Pablos Studios.
Pablos Studios work with artists from all backgrounds, and share ROAR! gallery’s vision for promoting Outsider Art. We define this as art which is untrained, self-taught, visionary, with its own internal self-supporting logic. In other words, art which is not necessarily approved or encompassed by the institution of art history. Art which is made for a variety of reasons, which are not necessarily to do with being ‘an artist’ or responding to recognised movements in art history.
‘Pick in Mix’ is a show about people who are telling the small stories, the individual life stories, or the community or cultural stories, rather than the big story of the history of art. The works are personal, integrated into the fabric of people’s lives. ROAR! gallery has a sneaking suspicion that New Zealand is very good at this kind of work, at ordinary people turning ordinary materials into extraordinary things.
Come along and see new works by Zofia Lipski where the forms are larger and more lushly coloured than life. This artist has worked with Pablos for years, and her works continue to delight a growing audience. Michael Cox has turned to collage, gritty textural works that confound our order-craving eyes.
Pablos Studio is base to 100 artists, and literally hums with creative energy: here are some of the products. |
