Imagine a pre-apocalyptic landscape and you’re caught in a dragnet bombarded by mindless layers of advertising, branding and an endless stream of images and symbols … Imagine a post-apocalyptic wasteland where a lone driver is stalked by a stealth bomber and his own state of mind.
Step into ROAR! gallery between 18 September and 4 October and this is the world you’ll encounter, where in true grind-house style we offer you two superb shows by Wellington’s leading exponents of urban illustration Kiran X and Peter Marment.
Kiran X’s exhibition, Devastation Highway is a road movie in 2D. “In the 80’s I was mesmerized by the opening credits of ‘Knight Rider’ where the black Trans-Am trails across the pink sunset desert. Recently I started thinking of the degradation and devastation of the land as an illustration of the human condition. I am constantly absorbing images from popular culture which I extend, remix and filter in my imagination until a logical environment is created … this is Devastation Highway.”
Peter Marment’s exhibition Dragnet is an intense juxtaposition of symbolism and imagery from everyday life, highlighting the power and influence they carry by subverting their appearance. “We’re absorbing the imagery we’re bombarded with on a daily basis and through our art we throw it right back, showing it from our perspective” says Marment.
Both these artists have exhibited in several Wellington galleries, boutiques and cafes. Their style is best described as urban-industrial using a mix of painted, stenciled and drawn pieces often worked and re-worked on found or purposely degraded materials.
Marment is a self taught artist. He works as an architectural designer, a profession which feeds hugely into his artwork due to his fascination with the built environment which is constructed and constantly changing around him. When Kiran X isn’t creating art he’s creating artists by teaching at Weltec and Pablos Art Studios. His teaching and personal art practice spans digital media, moving image, sculpture, photography and painting. |
